Dr. Ruth was a Sniper??

December 16, 2004 -

I suppose it's not totally outlandish, but it caught me a bit off guard when I heard it on NPR this morning. (apparently, she'll be speaking in Hartford soon) Doctor Ruth, that tiny and grandmotherly sex therapist, was trained as a sniper at age sixteen.

Tom Foreman: You were trained as a sniper?

Dr. Ruth: We were all trained in the forerunner of the Israeli Defense Force, and for some reason that I can't explain I'm a very good sniper. I can put five bullets into this little red circle (makes circle with her fingers). I know how to throw hand grenades.

Seems that she escaped Nazi Germany into Palestine, and was there when Israel declared its independence, which led to her sniper training. Hmm... whodathunk?

Lot's of people, probably. On the other side, though, I think there was a war on, and a lot of people learned to shoot. I think there's a large difference between someone who can put "five bullets into this little red circle" and a working sniper. I think there's a big difference between a tarket range and combat. That's what I think.

Exactly. Replace the word "sniper" with "marksman" and you have a feasible link. The role of the IDF as opposed to the active Army is also to be considered.
