The Sunday That Wouldn't Die

January 30, 2005 -

Today has been just hellish. One thing after another has gone wrong. After I'd been complaining for the past few weeks about how there was no weather here and no seasons, it snowed at least a foot. That in itself wasn't a huge problem, it only delayed us about 2 hours in the morning. It did however set the tone for the rest of the day.

The real problems started when we got back from shopping and Linda had to do some work involving her scanner. We hadn't yet hooked it back up again after our move, and when I went to do so, I noticed that the power cable was missing. This started a three and a half hour long hunt for the power cable which in the end was entirely fruitless.

In the end, we discovered that the power cable for her speakers was the same type necessary and used that instead.

Meanwhile, my computer was running so incredibly slowly that I've decided to reinstall the OS. Again. For some reason, my C drive is just about full. I uninstalled photoshop, and uninstalled two games which each which took up over a gig, but after that still had barely 15% of my drive free. I just can't figure it out. And so I'm forced into the shotgun approach. I'm backing up emails, bookmarks, and anything else I can think of in preparation for yet another reinstall.

Look what type of fun messages I'm getting...

I think that last time when I reinstalled XP on my machine, I didn't reformat the drive. I'm going to have to make sure to do that this time.

So after all that with Linda's scanner, we hooked it up, and her scans are looking like total crap, with streaks and lines through them. This started about 2 hours of troubleshooting, cleaning the glass, restarting the machine, searching HP's website for help, reading troubleshooting docs, and stressing out in general. We've now come to the conclusion that the scanner must have been damaged somehow in the move. It's less than 6 months old, and it's now worthless. Stupid 90 day warranty.

This is how our day is going.

We started the day with a ton of things to do. What have we gotten done? ZERO.

Update:

After booting from the CD and reformatting my drive, I got "A DISK READ ERROR HAS OCCURED. PRESS CTRL ALT DEL TO RESTART.", and nothing I did got me past that, even another reformat. I now suspect that this is the problem:
