Recycling Commercials

July 22, 2005 -

I've often had the thought that a lot of companies could do really well (not to mention save a lot of money) by recycling old commercials. Let's face it, over the past few decades there have been some commercials you'd end up talking with friends about later. For example, I think a lot of people would get a kick out of seeing Budwieser's frogs or whassap? commercials again.

Now, I've only ever seen this recycling I mention done with one commercial: the Flintstones Christmas commercial, which they seem to air nearly every Christmas. I'm not sure if other companies don't do it for legal reasons between them and the ad agency or what, but here follow three commercials I'd love to see re-aired.

Max Headroom Yes, I know it screams 80's, but I remember the first time I saw that darkened alleyway with the Pepsi Machine and the flickering lights, and saw Max Headroom, it was the coolest thing ever. I think that re-airing the commercial would be a big hit.

Kool Aid Man - Oh Yeah! This is probably the only one of the three that could do with an actual remake - all those original Kool Aid Man commercials seem hopelessly outdated. But I think that the company could capitalize on the camp that is Kool-Aid man, and have the character not really take himself seriously, in the same way that The Tick, Homestar Runner, and Radiskull don't take themselves seriously. Done right, a remake could be hilarious.

Where's the Beef? They wouldn't need any changes. Just re-air the whole Where's the Beef series of commercials as-is. I personally would love it.

I've got another one that'd be great re-aired, although it will never happen because it was part of Sprite's "imagine is nothing" campaign.

Jookie

Jookie! It's a party in a can!
What's better than Jookie?
JOOKIE JUNK!
Kid 1: I drank 93,000 cans of Jookie and I got this Jookie sock!
Kid 2: I got this Jookie chainsaw!
Kid 3: I got a Jookie hornet's nest!
Kid 4: I got this Jookie sea captain! Arrrrr!
Kid 5: I got this Jookie hernea belt, just like my favorite basketball player!
Kids: THANKS, JOOKIE!

That was a hilarious commercial. I think I might have it on a VHS tape somewhere.

Reminds me of the Robocop: Prime Directives Sci-Fi mini commercial about Otomo... basically, some toy doll like a tickle me Elmo named 'Otomo'.

It went something like this...

Kid 1: I love Otomo!
Kid 2: Otomo is my god!
Kid 3: I'll choke myself to death if you don't buy me Otomo!
Kid 4: Your bad parents if you don't buy me Otomo!
Kid 5: I *AM* Otomo!!!

Anybody remember Jolt Cola? Used to live on that stuff. It'll even dissolve a Twinkie.

Twinkies+coffee+Camels to write Fortran

Jolt+Beer Nuts+MJ to write VB

See how times have changed?

I finally found a copy of the Jooky Junk commercial. I'm hosting it in ZIP format so that you'll have to download and view it - it will save me bandwidth that way.

So here it is... enjoy! Jooky Junk

Girl: Hey! What's better than Jooky?
Kids: Jooky Junk!
Singers: Jooky! Jooky Junk!
Girl jumping on bed: I got this Jooky caulking gun!
Boy in Ball Crawl: I drank ninety three thousand cans, and I got this Jooky Sock!
Kids: Whoa...
Adult Basketball player: I got this Jooky Halibut!
Little girl in monkey pen: I got this Jooky Sea Captain!
Jooky Sea Captain: Arr!
Little boy holding hornets' nest on a stick:(yelling) I got this Jooky hornets' nest!
Little nerdy girl, standing next to basketball player: I got a Jooky hernia belt. Just like my favorite basketball player.
Boy in wacked out pink setting, with pink french poodle model: I got this Jooky chainsaw!
Woman with big blonde anvil-shaped hair: Thanks Jooky!

In general, the embedded commercials added a great deal to all the RoboCop movies. The way corporations and governments are confusing their roles these days, it may not be too long . . .
