Starforce

February 6, 2006 -

If you keep up to date with PC game news, you likely already know about Starforce. If you don't, let me sum things up. Starforce is a copy protection system shipped with many newer PC games. It has caused controversy because many users claim that the Starforce software will cause their PCs to run slower than normal or even crash - even after the software that uses Starforce is uninstalled!

After installing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time recently, I learned (too late!) that it utilizes Starforce. Luckily, I've encountered no problems. However, despite Starforce's claims to the contrary, I still believe that their software causes problems on many other system configurations. So between that and the fact that Starforce is actually reporting BoingBoing.net to the FBI for a defamatory blog posting, I've decided to join the Boycott of Starforce in which many gamers are participating. I uninstalled Prince of Persia due to my frustration with the control scheme on the PC, and I plan to reinstall XP as soon as I have an actual internet connection at home so as to reinstall my Steam games and download all the software I'll need.

You can find a listing of games that use Starforce here.

I had one game from the list... Gangland, which is pretty lame unless you install the patch (and then it's just so-so). No worries since I wiped out windows and did a reinstall a few weeks back. Thanks for the info.

X3 had it in the American version too. Guess the wife and I will have to play Syberia II on my computer. I've never had any problems with Starforce that I can tell. I don't like the whole "can't install" feature, but no obvious slowdowns or other symptoms. They probably have some deal with Dell.
