Starforce Strikes Again

March 17, 2006 -

You may remember a couple weeks ago when I posted about Starforce. Starforce is a company that makes copy protection software packaged with many popular video games, and some users claim that Starforce's software interferes with the operation of their PC.

Recently, Galactic Civilizations 2 was released - an excellent turn-based strategy game. And Galactic Civilizations 2 has no copy protection whatsoever. You don't even need the disk in the drive in order to play the game. Based largely on this, I bought a copy, though I have yet to install it.

So Galactic Civilizations 2 is selling remarkably well. This of course is bad for business when you're a company that sells game copy-protection software. So Starforce, in an apparent attempt to show everyone how easy it was to pirate a game without copy protection, posted links on their forums to pirated copies of Galactic Civilizations 2. Ooh! Perhaps if Galactic Civilizations 2 had employed Starforce, this would never have happened!

Real nice, Starforce. Teach Galactic Civilizations 2 a lesson for not using your software. Real nice.

It seems that StarForce later apologized, but I still don't like them. The good folks at GalCiv2 also had some intelligent commentary on the situation. Gamespot's HotSpot reported on this issue - check out their episode for March 14th, between 17:23 and 24:18. Lastly, Penny Arcade has drawn up yet another irrevrant and hilarious comic about it all.
