Stomp!

June 18, 2006 -

StompLinda and I got tickets to go see Stomp at the Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs this past Friday night. I've never been into musicals - I fell asleep during Nutcracker at the Bushnell in Hartford. But Stomp was awesome.

It's all about creating interesting rhythms and sounds with common everyday items: brooms, rubber tubing, garbage cans, water bottles, plastic bags, newspapers, sinks full of water, matchboxes, lighters... you name it. They used so many different things in new and interesting ways.

StompThe show was a kind of combination of theatre, dance, and acting, but there was no speech the whole time. Only laughter, wordless cries and grunts, and communication via facial expression. There was a lot of comedy and a lot of tapdance-esque rhythm. I highly recommend it to anyone who's into music, dance, or just a fun night out.

You can catch some limited video clips of a few of the stomp acts here.

I guess you and I are having an artzy weekend. On Satruday I saw the 1922 version of Robin Hood with Douglas Fairbanks (Sr). Hesperus (woodwind/string quartet) provided the medieval/renaissance score. I had to drive an hour to New London, but it was worth it. It was surprisingly entertaining.

As for Stomp, I've always wanted to see that one.

Oh, Speaking of old movies and stompin'

Nicholas Brothers - Stormy Weather - 1942

I'm not a big tap fan, but about 30 seconds into this thing... stuff starts to get really interesting.

I caught "Stomp" in New Haven about 2 years ago. Greg's gonna be tapping pen's on his desk at work and making weird little rythm's with inanimate objects for about a week.
