Video Game Roundup

October 4, 2006 -

I've been all over the place recently with the games I'm playing, and it seemed about time for a... (cue booming voice) Video Game Roundup!

Thief: The Dark ProjectI haven't yet finished Thief: Deadly Shadows, because my computer is freezing again. I'm on the last mission, but I'll probably have to uninstall my sound card to play through it. However, I did get copies of Thief: The Dark Project and Thief: Metal Age in the mail, and I actually gave the first one a quick try. The graphics are on par with the first Half-Life game, which is a bit hard to stomach, but I'm going to play it anyway. It's also way harder than Thief: Deadly Shadows. There's no darkness anywhere to hide in, and way too many blind corners. But Brandon tells me the story is good, so I'll be hanging in there for as long as possible.

Last weekend, I also reinstalled a game I never got very far in: Jedi Knight 2. I'm not sure if I'll stick it out for the entire game, but I'm at least into the second mission. Also, as you may have noticed by checking my video game sidebar, I'm finally trying out Diablo 2. I played the first one on my Playstation 1 long ago, and I'm finding the PC version of its sequel to be fun, if dated. My sorceress is about 15th level right now. Linda is due to get her new PC any day, so maybe we'll play that old thing together. Lastly, I've got Far Cry reinstalled, and I'm a decent way into my third replay of the game.

Phoenix Wright: Ace AttourneyOn the Nintendo DS front, I've got more games than I can complete. You see, I have a need to complete a game before I can put it aside. This was a big problem with Oblivion, which is nigh impossible to truly complete. My DS case has space for three DS games, plus one in the actual DS. And two of those slots are taken up by Brain Training and Mario Kart, both of which I play frequently but will never complete. I've also got Advance Wars DS and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, both of which I play often enough but am not near completing. This leaves Phoenix Wright: Ace Attourney, which I'm very near completing. I need to finish it so that I can take it out of my DS case and stop having to switch things out so often.

Aside from the Wii, which I've been eagerly awaiting, there are two games that I'm dying to see ported to the PC. Firstly, Resident Evil 4, which was supposed to be ported to the PC as of mid-September. The date was pushed back, and I'm still waiting. Secondly, Jade Empire, which was XBox-only. It's being ported to the PC as a Special Edition, and I'm looking forward to it. Supposedly, that one's being released in January.

Jedi Knight 2 kicked ass. Once you have your full blown Force powers, there's nothing like doing a Force choke on a Stormtrooper, lifting them up, throwing your saber and watching as the legs fall but the torso remains. Fun! I think you may have to turn on dismemberments in the console for that one, but it's way worth it.

Jade Empire was awesome.

Why not just play Resident Evil 4 on the Wii? The Wii will play GameCube games and support GCN controllers, so you can pick both the game and a controller up on the cheap and play it that way.

BTW, I'm selling Metroid Prime Hunters and Star Fox Command for the DS, so let me know if you think about expanding the size of that case. ;)

The reason I first bought a PS2 was to play Resident Evil 4 and Starcraft: Ghost. But I haven't bought RE4 for the PS2 because it's hard for me to get time in front of the TV - I've got a wife who likes to hang out in front of the TV and knit, do work, or whatever. So rather than kicking her off to play games, I go into the other room and play on my PC.

I never bought Metroid for the DS because a FPS on a handheld just doesn't work for me. And I think I'd get sick of Starfox very quickly. As you apparently have. ;)

Not sure if a PS2 to VGA adaptor would help you play Resident Evil 4 earlier, but they do make them and you can pick one up for about 50 bucks.

The moment I became a console gamer was when we finished our basement and got another tv down there, thereby ensuring I didn't have to kick the wife off of the tv. Had that never happened, I'd still be a diehard PC gamer, no doubt updating video card drivers as we speak.

It's not that I tired easily of Star Fox, more that it's a short game and I'm not one for replaying things just to get different endings. Metroid works pretty well on the DS, but I do have some serious hand cramping after prolonged sessions.

The only other DS games that currently exist which I might get are Resident Evil DS, some of the Zelda games, and Mario and Luigi Partners in Time.
