Video Game Roundup, Early 2008

January 22, 2008 -

It's actually been a while since I wrote about games, so I figure I'd rattle on for a bit about what I've been playing.

I just finished re-playing Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and it's still as good a game as it was when I first played it. Amazingly, my Radeon X1300 broke a sweat rendering the four-year-old game. I blew through the game much more quickly than the first time, but still had a lot of fun. In related news, it looks like there's going to be a new Riddick game coming out eventually entitled Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. It will include a re-textured version of Escape From Butcher Bay, as well as the new game.

The game introduces the ominous Merc-ship Dark Athena, which sits silent like a marauding spider, awaiting helpless prey in the dark reaches of the galaxy. Players must face a large, bloodthirsty operation led by the dreaded Captain Revas and her slaves-turned-controllable combat drones, storm though death-defying events and fight fierce enemies in a battle of malice and gore.

This is great news for my brother Sean, who has wanted to play the original Riddick game, but been frustrated by the fact that it's not on the XBox 360's backwards compatible list. I just hope they release a PC version.

The game on which I've been spending the most time since this past weekend is actually the original Baldur's Gate, which I'm playing through with Linda co-op. She's got three characters, and I've got three. Actually, I've only got two right now. She's playing Klarina, her made-up Paladin, Jahiera, and Imoen, and I'm playing Khalid, and my made-up fighter who I'll dual to a mage at 3rd. I named him Cloverfield. We just hit the Nashkel mines, and we're mostly still first level.

I started the Baldurs Gate 2 expansion, Throne of Bhall, but haven't gotten very far in. I'll go back to it soon, I suppose. I also installed Call of Duty 4, which I might start playing tonight, since Linda will be watching American Idol. I can't stand that show.

On the Wii, I haven't picked up Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles in about two weeks - I need to go back and play that a bit more. And I'm playing Mario Galaxy a few hours every weekend. I think I currently have about 60 stars, which I believe is enough to beat the game if I'm so inclined, but I've got other galaxies I want to explore first. I hear there are 120 stars in the game. I'll never get them all, but I'd like to get more than I have now.

On the DS, my main game right now is Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, a horribly named remake of the original Resident Evil. I enjoyed that game, and the DS version is nearly identical, so it's equally good. The only problem is that while most DS games are geared towards quick periods of play, Resident Evil and its typewriter ribbon save methodology lend themselves more to long periods of play, which is probably why I haven't picked the game up recently.

I do still play the Dr. Mario portion of Brain Age 2 fairly often, and I've also obtained a copy of Konami Collectors Series, a GBA cart with Frogger, Scramble, Rush 'N Attack, Gyruss, and Yier Ar Kung Fu. I'm enjoying those quite a bit, mostly Frogger and Rush 'N Attack.

I'm still looking at getting a new PC by summer, but with all these older games to play, plus the fact that I want to play Splinter Cell and replay Beyond Good and Evil again, I'm sure I won't run out of titles soon.
