Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins

June 19, 2008 - -

Post-Judgement Day Los AngelesI found some news about the fourth terminator movie recently, and I couldn't be happier. The first Terminator film wa great, and the second was perhaps even better. But the third was mostly crap. I've voiced my complaint about the subject enough on this blog, and even offered an alternative script for the third movie. But the news I've heard about the fourth had me doing a happy dance.

This movie takes place several years after Judgment Day, but prior to 2029. Just like it took a long time to get an HD plasma screen in our world, it took Skynet a lot of research and development to get to the T-800, and this movie explores that "space between." We have all been fascinated with the world after Judgment Day. Here it is.

In this film, there are Hydrobots that patrol the water, Transports that move human prisoners around, Harvesters that collect human beings as lab rats for Skynet and Aerostats that survey all that is going on with the resistance the world over.

We've started shooting the T-600 - the bigger, grimier, nastier version that preceded the T-800.

Like Reese says, they're easier to spot but they pack a mini gun and carry kick ass fire power. They're eight-foot tall killers that prowl the badlands looking for anything with a heartbeat to terminate.

How's that? I've always said I wanted to see more of the HKs and the T-600s, and less of the super-high-tech stuff. I'm just not sure why they need an eight foot tall humanoid to stalk the badlands - couldn't they use a tank? You'd figure the humanoid robots would be only for infiltration.

Anyway, the ideas I'm reading here sound really good.

Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, John Connor (Christian Bale), the man fated to be the leader of the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators, and the future he was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a Terminator whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they find out a terrible secret that may lead to the possible annihilation of mankind.

Sounds promising. Anyway, it can't be worse than Terminator 3.

I am also somewhat excited for this film, since the third one was so bad. The only thing that frightens me is that the director is McG (never trust a guy whose name sounds like a McDonalds rap artist)...his great accomplishment? Charlie's Angels.

On a sidenote, I almost bought the Time Travelers Wife yesterday, let me know how it is. Instead I decided to buy a Jim Butcher book, not his dresden files series, but another one.

Ha. I read a possible spoiler that I think could indeed make it worse than Terminator 3. I won't reveal it unless asked though. Wouldn't want to ruin anything for anyone.
