Podcast Roundup

September 30, 2008 -

I've still got that hour commute every day. Yeah - it's getting old. Some day, I won't have a commute. And I'll only be able to listen to one or two podcast a week. But in the meantime, these are the podcasts I'm listening to weekly.

  • The Totally Rad Show - This one comes as both a video and audio podcast. I often load the quicktime file onto my iPod, which I pretty much never use except for video. The Samsung YPU2J is so much better. Anyway, Jeff, Alex, and Dan are three geeks with whom I can totally identify. They talk about movies, TV, video games, comics, and a lot of the same stuff I talk about on this blog. And they start out every episode by remaking a scene from a movie. It's pretty rad.
  • GeeksOn - GeeksOn is still one of my favorite podcasts. It's released less than frequently, but they just put out their 100th episodes, and are now trying to get to a bi-weekly release schedule. We'll see how that works out.
  • Children Of The Gods - Talk about a sporadic release schedules - Children of the Gods probably releases two episodes a year. But damn, I love the story.
  • PC Gamer Podcast - Since Gamespot's podcast has gotten kind of lousy, this is now my main gaming podcast. The PC Gamer Podcast is actually done entirely via Skype, which is kind of cool.
  • The Onion Radio News - The Onion Radio news sends out very short news clip type podcasts. And they're pretty damn funny.
  • Slice of SciFi - Slice of SciFi's interviews aren't what they once were, and I often skip them. But they have a lot of good info about TV, Movies, and other science fiction stuff I never knew about.
  • Scott Sigler's Audiobooks - Sigler's Bloodcast is full of his podcast fiction. he's currently finishing up a story called Nocturnal, but my favorites of his are The Rookie and EarthCore.
  • Wired's Alt Text - Lore Sjoberg does Wired's Alt Text podcast. It's fairly short, although usually a bit longer than the Onion's podcast. Lore is a damn funny guy - he's the guy who started that whole "so disbarred" meme.
  • Murder at Avedon Hill Podcast Novel - Written by P.G. Holyfield, Murder at Avedon Hill is a mystery set in a very D&D-like world. I'm enjoying it.
  • Strong Bad Email - If you haven't heard of HomestarRunner.com, what's wrong with you?. The podcast has video clips of the flash cartoons. It's dot com!
  • The Secret Lair - The Secret Lair is Kris Johnson's podcast. It's been on an infrequent schedule, likely owing to the relocation of Kris's partner in crime evil science.
  • The Brainy Gamer Podcast - Michael's got a very academic perspective on video games, which makes sense since he teaches at a college and actually has a class about the history of RPGs. His podcast is worth a listen.
  • GameSpot presents The HotSpot - Gamespot's podcast has gone downhill. It's fallen to the bottom of my list, and may soon fall off. But for now, I'm still listening.
  • The Butcher Block - This is a very infrequent podcast, but I still listen. Every once in a while I get some news about The Dresden Files.

I've also been looking into The Metamor City Podcast, which looks potentially good. I've got it downloaded, but I'm gonna have to drop some of the above podcasts if I want time to actually listen to it. I also listened to a podcast called Brave Men Run recently, and while it was shorter than I'd have liked, it was very good. I recommend it.

Thanks for including my podcast in your roundup. Much appreciated. I enjoy several you listed (love the Onion News), but others are new to me. Looking forward to checking them out!
