Fall Television Overview

October 22, 2012 -

How quickly fall comes. Personally, I'm glad to say goodbye to the scorching summer temperatures and welcome those crisp autumn days where the temperature is in the 50s. Another good thing about fall? TV shows. Let's discuss.

Revolution - I had high hopes for this show. It made me think a bit of Black Monday, a bit of the TV show Jericho and a bit of the TV show Flash Forward, which was in no way as good as the book Flashforward. In the end, Revolution kind of stunk. After catching an early preview of the pilot on Hulu, I resolved never to watch again.

Fringe - At the end of season two, Fringe got really good. Season three blew me away as some of the best television I'd ever seen. Season four got a bit weird, and ultimately left me underwhelmed. But season five has now taken a drastically different direction, and seems very promising. The bottom line is that the show has direction. This most recent episode was very good, and I can't wait to see where the show goes from here.

Last Resort - What a stinker. After seeing a preview, I'd had the impression that the show might be very interesting during the first episode or two, and then quickly go south. Unfortunately, I was wrong. It wasn't good for the first episode. There were just so many moments that were downright stupid. And the pacing was horrible. Things moved so fast as to be jarring. I'm thinking the show's technical director and/or editor should find a new career.

Dexter - The last couple seasons of Dexter were good, but not great. This season is looking up. The show hasn't ever been afraid to kill off major characters midseason, and things are now happening that we've thought might happen from the first few episodes. The series story arc is beginning to conclude, although I know that there's supposed to be one season following this one.

Homeland - After a slow start, Homeland has me really intrigued again. No show does a better job of creating tense moments. While no moment this season has yet come close to the tension I felt during the final episode of the first season, it's still early.

Arrow - I can't think of a really good capes-and-cowls television show. Shows like Heroes, Misfits, and Alphas have been good at times, but that's largely due to the fact that the superheroes in those shows lead normal lives. Shows like The Cape just flopped. I'm thinking that Arrow will go the same route. I'm not digging it.

The Big Bang Theory - As the only sit-com in my television roster, Big Bang remains good.

The Walking Dead - The most recently started show, the third season of The Walking Dead is off to a good start. The exploration of the prison was good, it was tense, and it felt a lot like a gritty D&D romp. I won't go into spoilers on the show, but I did enjoy it.
