Cold Brew Coffee

February 20, 2013 -

I have made an amazing discovery. I can't recall exactly where I first heard about it, but after reading about cold brew coffee last week, I decided to give it a try.

It's incredibly easy to make. Put coffee grounds in water, leave them overnight, and strain out the grounds in the morning. The result is a less bitter coffee than you get from traditional coffee makers. I've always been one to drink my coffee with lots of cream and sugar, but this stuff I drink sugarless. And it's better. Sure it's less sweet than it would be with sugar, but I've found that without that coffee bitterness, it doesn't need sugar.

And the other thing? This stuff has way more caffiene. I don't know exactly how much more, but I don't need more than one cup of this stuff. And I'm fairly caffiene tolerant. I can normally drink a cup of coffee before bed at night and have no trouble sleeping. I've heard that many people dilute cold brew coffee, but I like it as-is. Full strength.

If you're interested in making cold brew coffee, Wikipedia provides the following guide, which I've halved when I've made cold brew coffee at medium strength:

Weak: 8oz (.5lb) grounds per 7 cups (56 fl oz) water
Medium: 12oz (.75lb) grounds per 7 cups (56 fl oz) water
Strong: 16oz (1lb) grounds per 7 cups (56 fl oz) water

The other thing? I've generally let the grounds sit overnight for around 12 hours before straining. I may soon try leaving them for longer to see how it goes.
