A Cardinal Named Dennis

December 2, 2004 -

I was musing this morning about the things in Brewster I'll miss once we move. I'll miss the old house with the three fireplaces - as poorly insulated and mouse and mosquito-infested as it is, I'll miss our little Tavern with our favorite waitress of all time, I'll miss the hill Linda and I drive over every day on the way to the train station which we've named "Sunrise Hill".

DennisBut I'll also miss Dennis. Dennis is the name we've given the cardinal who attacks our dining room window every morning. At first, we thought he was insane, but eventually we came to treasure and enjoy his frantic attacks on the aging windowpanes of our 200-year-old house. I can only assume that he's attacking his reflection.

Dennis disappeared over most of the summer, and when he reappeared a few weeks back as the weather grew colder, Linda and I were very excited, and rushed out quietly to watch him throw his tiny body heedlessly into our window time and again. You might ask... why did we name him Dennis? It's mostly because of this.

Ahh, Dennis... ye will be missed.
