Bad Sci Fi Shows

October 2, 2014 - - -

I hate bad science fiction. There's so much of it out there. My wife and I recently watched the pilot for a show called The After in which some kind of apocalypse is happening, people are scrambling for food and shelter, and law enforcement has completely broken down. However, not only does nobody know why everyone has begun freaking out and acting this way, none of the characters cares or asks the question. It makes no sense.

This kind of problem isn't new. Think back to everyone's favorite show, Lost. Although I was very intrigued at first, in the end I hated it. They asked so many questions, and everyone was itching for answers. But even when the show ended, the answers never came. We'd thought and hoped that the writers had a plan and knew what was happening. But they were just making up crazy stuff with no plan in mind for where things were going. That's unforgivable.

There's a reason why shows that are based on novels do well. It's because the novel was written with an ending in mind. And ending that makes sense. So as long as the show sticks to the plot of the novel, it follows a coherent story arc. When the TV show diverges from the plot of the novel, you end up with a train wreck like Legend of the Seeker. The TV adaptation of The Dresden Files was ruined the same way, if not quite as badly.

I gave up on Warehouse 13 just a couple episodes in, and No Ordinary Family was complete garbage. Battlestar Galactica had some great space combat, but the direction the plot headed late in the series completely killed anything good they had going. The show needed to be more about the conflict and less about "Ooh! Maybe this guy is a Silon!".

I am completely willing to give a show a couple seasons if it seems like it has potential. Heck, Fringe wasn't great during season 1, and it became one of my favorite shows ever. This is why I'm giving Agents of SHIELD some time. I was willing to give the new V series that same leeway, but it was cancelled.

In the end, I guess I'm just complaining that there are no good shows out right now. When does season 3 of Orphan Black start?
