Soundtrack Playlist

April 24, 2015 - -

This isn't my first article about soundtracks - I've covered my favorite video game soundtracks in the past. But I've found a lot of good soundtracks recently, and this gives me a chance to make a new playlist and mix in a few of my old favorites.

The ads are bugging me so much that I may stop doing these playlists. If you can tolerate the ads, this is great music.

A Proper Story, from the Bastion soundtrack. Darren Korb's entire soundtrack from Bastion is brilliant. This song is one of many.

Wheels, from the Legend of Korra soundtrack. I've got multiple songs from this soundtrack in my playlist, because the whole thing is superb. This song is almost two songs. A first tune that's intense, then it stops and slowly builds intensity again, finishing slower but still very intense.

Mountains, from the Interstellar soundtrack. The soundtrack overall is very quiet, and this track is no exception. But what's brilliant to me about this piece is that it plays while the characters are inside an intense gravitational field where time is passing at months per second. The clock that is ticking from the song's outset doesn't let you forget, and the building tempo highlights the importance of time.

Noctourne, from the Tron Legacy soundtrack. A slow and quiet piece, which is part of another excellent soundtrack by Daft Punk. It's the chord changes that get me on this one.

Asteroid Field, from the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack. My favorite song in the soundtrack from my favorite movie. It doesn't really start until around 1:15, and my favorite part is the theme that kicks in at 2:17. I'll bet you can remember exactly where in the movie you've heard this before.

In Awe of the Power, from the Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack. This is a soundtrack I love and have listened to for years, and it felt wrong not to include one song in this list.

The Battle of Gall, from the Shadows of the Empire soundtrack. Not a lot of people know that there are actually seven Star Wars soundtracks. Three from the original trilogy, three from the prequels, and one from a book. This is from the Shadows of the Empire soundtrack, which is excellent.

Forecast, from the Transistor soundtrack. Honestly, the entire soundtrack is amazing. The best tracks are the vocal ones, and I'm not including any vocal tracks in this playlist. But if you get a chance, check them out. So good.

Chi Blockers, from the Legend of Korra soundtrack. This is a great song, and contains so many similarities to the soundtrack from The Matrix that I feel obliged to place it right next to the following track.

Mona Lisa Overdrive, from the Matrix Reloaded soundtrack. One of the best songs in the series, and it's almost as if Mona Lisa and Overdrive are two different tracks given the switch at 2:18.
