I've been an avid reader of fantasy and sci-fi books since I can remember - reading C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and the book that really dragged me into it all - Terry Brooks's Elfstones of Shannara, which I read when I was 14. I still read a lot, and I've taken to posting reviews of the books here. Enjoy.
Legend of Nightfall, The, by Mickey Zucker Reichert
This is Reichert's best work, aside from the Renshai series. In this world, one in a thousand people is born with some kind of magical power, but these people generally kep their abilities secret, out of fear of sorcerers. Sorcerers are those who are able to steal the magic of others by torturing them to death.
One of the things I liked most about this book was that while the thief Nightfall had built up a near-demonic infamy, the actual man was far from invincible, and his solution to most problems was to run rather than to fight. I found that aspect refreshing in the midst of so many books that feature characters who solve problems by hacking away at their enemies.
