Game of Thrones, by George R. R. Martin
I thought this was an excellent book. The characters were less monolothic than in the books of Robert Jordan or Terry Brooks, meaning that not everyone is clearly definable as a "good guy" or "bad guy". It's a low-fantasy book, but supernatural elements are definately in play from the beginning. It's also less G-rated than many other books - you will see graphic sex and graphic violence. Overall, it's one of the most realistic fantasy books I've read.
