I've been an avid reader of fantasy and sci-fi books since I can remember - reading C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and the book that really dragged me into it all - Terry Brooks's Elfstones of Shannara, which I read when I was 14. I still read a lot, and I've taken to posting reviews of the books here. Enjoy.
Amber Spyglass, The, by Philip Pullman

The Amber Spyglass was a good conclusion to the His Dark Materials series, but although there was a lot in the story that I really enjoyed, the main story arc was the least interesting part.
Although it was better than The Subtle Knife, it wasn't nearly as good as The Golden Compass. After the crazy left turn in book two, it was hard to go back. Still, the adventures of Wil and Lyra remained entertaining, even if Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter were less interesting.
My favorite part of the book was the addition of another new world and a new race, which is part of the storyline of Dr. Mary Malone and The Amber Spyglass. These strange creatures have evolved in a perfect synergy with their world. They take rock-hard seedpods and use them as wheels, and travel as if they were motorcycles on smooth lava-floe roads. Their world and their ways were one of the things that really made the story for me.
If you've read The Subtle Knife, I recommend going on to The Amber Spyglass, but if you've only read the Golden Compass, consider stopping there.
