I've been an avid reader of fantasy and sci-fi books since I can remember - reading C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and the book that really dragged me into it all - Terry Brooks's Elfstones of Shannara, which I read when I was 14. I still read a lot, and I've taken to posting reviews of the books here. Enjoy.
Storm Front, by Jim Butcher
I picked up this book because it looked interesting and I'd heard it was an easy read, but I was totally unprepared for what a good book it would be. Complex and intriguing plot, well-developed setting and characters, and well-placed understated humor. I loved it.
Harry Dresden is a wizard living in Chicago, practicing publicly. Most people think he's a nut. But he's the real deal. He consults for the local police, and takes private eye type cases, but it barely pays the bills most days. This week, he'll be lucky if he can just stay alive.
I'd watched the television show based on these books, which is I suppose what first got me interested. But (no surprise) the book is so much better. The things that are slightly different are better in the book, and there's so much more that was omitted from the TV show entirely.
