Batman: No Man's Land, by Greg Rucka
This is amongst the best comic-based novels I've read. The book is certainly dark, which I suppose is part of the Batman idiom. While I don't fancy myself a comic enthusiast, the story was well-told and I enjoyed it.
The crux of the tale is that following a devastating eartquake in Gotham, the entire city is cordoned off and declared a "no man's land", wherein no law is enforced. It's effectively no longer part of the United States. Of course, various costumed crusaders remain behind to try to help.
The story is complex and has many subplots. There are many villains, and plenty of characters who don't easily fit into the role of hero or villain. My friend Charlie who gave me this book even shows up as a minor character, which is very cool.
