Car Wars Reborn

Monday, February 27th 2006 ·

One of my first postings on this blog was about my favorite old computer games, and one of those was Car Wars, a.k.a. Autoduel. Now, it looks like there's finally - at long last - been a remake, albeit a low-budget one.

Mexican Motor MafiaMexican Motor Mafia is one half Car Wars, one quarter Big Trouble in Little China, and one quarter Sin City. A crazy King Boss Hell type named Priest escapes from prison and kills your brother, the cop who arrested him. Now you're out for revenge. I played two or three battles, bought a shotgun and a new car, and was pretty impressed by the gameplay.

You can buy both aimed (guns) and dropped (oil slick/smokescreen) weapons, upgrade your car to hold more weapons and carry more cargo, and improve your character's skills. Pretty good for an independantly produced game.

You can download and play the first chapter for free. I'd recommend giving it a shot.

On a related note... Auto Assault (an MMO game) is in Beta.

Basically it's the same as Car Wars except MMO.

I remember that Car Wars game - "The Sentient Corpse" was piloting a car with no real weapons, only a ram plate. But that thing was deadly.
