Bioshock Graphics Problems

August 22, 2007 -

Looks like BioShock won't run on my PC. I bought the game from Steam, and now I find out that the game won't run at all without a graphics card that supports pixel shader 3. How disappointing. I wonder if there are any cheap and easy-to-install graphics cards out there that support SM3.

That sucks. Hopefully you'll get it straightened out soon.

Tell me about it...Nowhere on the box nor before purchasing does it state this.....
MANY people with less than brand new cards have bought it and can't play it at all....
I personally had to go buy a video card that cost 5 TIMES as much as I paid for the game to get it to run at ALL...and I am irate.

I really wouldn't have minded if it had just made it PLAIN on the box that you must have SM 3.0 to run the thing...But I can assure you that you aren't the only one that got bitten and are now out in the cold...It appears that possibly more purchasers can't run it than CAN...and that's very bad business.

In fact....The Radeon web site has a driver patch that it made specifically for Bioshock...and it list many cards that do NOT support SM 3.0...Such as my old 9600XT and the 9800 Pro, as well as the X800 series...NONE of these run the game, but ATI lists them as cards supported using thier patch...

This is just EVIL.

I hope the information gets out before too many others get burned as badly as you and I have...But there are over 3000 names already on the petition on the 2K Games site to do a SM 2.0 patch for the thing...a LOT of people are rightfully upset.

I'm playing the game now and I got up to Arcadia.

The retro feel of the game is a lot like Fallout, except instead of hot and dry... it's cold and wet. You'll hear lots of old standards. I recognized 'Bei Mir Bist du Schöen' by The Andrews Sisters and 'If I Didn't Care' by the Ink Spots (possibly a homage to 'Maybe' by the Ink Spots in Fallout 1). I also liked the instrumental which you may recognize when you get in the bathysphere.

As you'll probably already expect, the stars of the game are the Big Daddies and the Little Sisters. The name 'Little Sister' and the abducting of children for their resources makes me wonder if they were influenced by the film 'City of Lost Children' at all.

I don't want to say too much more before anyone has had a chance to play. I have a relatively new machine, and even I was thinking... "Is it going to work?" Great game, but I hope the trouble they've caused hits them in the wallet.

Ya, I downloaded demo and once I got into the actuall game play (right after airplane scene) all I see is fire and smoke, and little pictures falling from the sky.

Ooh! Check out what I just found on the 2K forums! Some guy has a hack to make BioShock run on shader model 2 cards! I've got a Radeon X1300 card in the mail, so I won't be trying this, but for anyone who googles and finds this page, this will probably be a valuable link!

Further research - the page has a website at shadershock.tk. The good stuff is here.

To DJRIGGS

That's exactly what I saw... It's like there's a missing cutscene or something. I managed to swim to shore and find the bathysphere. Yea, not the strongest of game intros/openings.

No crashes for me running maxed @ 1680 on XP, but I have another problem. I have an 8800 ultra and my machine scores 12,000+ on 3D mark 06 and guess what... lotsa stuttering/pausing. What makes it more frustrating is that fraps shows a very good framerate even when these events occur. I've trouble shot my PC to death and it seems healthy as can be so I'm baffled. The game is great though!!!

I'm running this machine right now on my new $50 Radeon X1300, and Bioshock seems to run just fine.
