Wil Wheaton's Keynote Address at Penny Arcade Expo '07

August 28, 2007 -

Wil WheatonI just listened to the first six minutes and 20 seconds of Wil Wheaton's Keynote Address at PAX '07. It is awesome. It is rated R, certainly, but before anything else, Wil fully qualifies himself as a huge geek. And just to let you know, I got every one of his gaming references except "Beware, I Live".

It is quite an excellent and well-delivered speech, and yes he does drop references to his roles in Stand By Me and Star Trek, The Next Generation. I've put the whole thing on my mp3 player, and plan to listen to it tomorrow morning. I highly recommend it.

I haven't listened to the audio, but "Beware, I Live" is from the classic arcade game, Sinistar. The Sinistar construct also says, "I hunger!" (among other things) which often leads to a mish-mash misquote in the form of "I live! I hunger!"

I listened to the entire mp3 at work today and it was quite good. My first arcade game was also Asteroids... and I remember Pong too.

He also made a good point about sportsmanship and how if people behaved like many online gamers do now, they'd get the crap beaten out of them. That made me smile.

... Oh, and the part where his 17 year old asked if it was OK to play Vice City... That was fun.

I really enjoyed the whole thing. Was it pandering to the crowd? Probably. Was it entertaining? Definitely.
