Movie Cliches I Can Do Without

Tuesday, September 16th 2008 ·

A quick list today of movie and television cliches.

  • "He's either very smart or very stupid" - This may or may not have started with The Pink Panther, but it's been severely overused since then. When you think about it, it really makes no sense whatsoever.
  • "This time, it's personal." - This one could only have come from the eighties.
  • "So crazy it just might work" - You know there are tons of movies that have used this line, but try to name one.
  • "There's a storm coming" - I'm not sure if Terminator was the first movie to use this particular metaphor, but it's been used similarly in more places than I can count. American Gods, anyone?
  • (The fortress collapsing as the heroes narrowly escape) - This last one, rather than a quote, is a device. I saw Conan the Destroyer recently, and it brought to mind just how cliche this one is.

That's all. Told you it was short.

Doctor Who does all of these fairly often. Ranked pretty much in that order too... No wonder why you don't like the programme.

Being a Doctor Who fan of some 35 years standing, I can only conjecture that the frequent use of overworked cliches can only be intended to be comical or satirical. If that seems a bit dry or subtle, keep in mind we are dealing with Brits (or, more specifically and recently, Welsh) humor (humour?)
