2014 in Video Games

December 4, 2014 -

I've been busy in 2014. Not a lot of time for games. So whereas I played 32 games in 2013 and 27 games in 2012, I only played fifteen games in 2014, if you don't count PixelJunk Monsters, which I've been playing a lot and probably should have included in the list.

  1. Far Cry 3 (PC) - Third one. Let me try to remember. The first was the insanely difficult one. The second one was the one with fire and malaria. The third one? Oh yeah! The hunting animals one. With the crazy drug doctor guy. This was okay - it scratched my shooter itch for the year and let me do a bunch of sneaking up on bad guys. Other than that, not memorable.
  2. 10000000 (Android) - A fun little matching game with a fighting monsters mechanic and an endless runner facade. I enjoyed it for a while, but like most phone games, I was done with it after a few weeks.
  3. Minecraft (PC) - I wonder if I'll ever stop going back to Minecraft. I put it aside for six months, and then I go back and spend a solid month building something huge.
  4. Out There (Android) - A really excellent Android game. It's mostly about resource management, but has tiny chunks of story that you can unearth while exploring planets.
  5. QuizUp (Android) - For a week or two, I was really digging this multiplayer trivia game. I played it until I got the "smells of rich mohagany" title, then called it quits.
  6. The Last of Us (PS3) - I played it for the story, although the gameplay was also very good. Lots of stealth, which I appreciate, and a good bit of shooting. This is right up my alley, although I had a bit of a negative reaction to the ending. This in itself isn't a bad thing, but the main character Joel is a horrible person.
  7. Far Cry: Blood Dragon (PC) - Intentionally cheezy. I laughed my tail off at the beginning of the game, but the gag got old quickly for me, and I didn't finish the game.
  8. LA Noire (PS3) - It was interesting, but I had to bend over backwards to get enough free space on my PS3's hard drive to fit the game. I played through the first two or three "desks" until I was told that I had to download more. Sorry, Sony. I have no free drive space. I suppose I should have gotten the disc version.
  9. Wordiest (Android) - After seeing MC Frontalot post about the game, I gave it a try. Kind of fun, but gets old quickly.
  10. The Walking Dead, Season 2 (PC) - I loved the first season so much that I tore through each episode of season two on launch day. In the end, the first season was better than the second, but season two was still a good time.
  11. Small World (Android) - Good board-to-screen translations of good board games are always welcome. The port of Small World is great, and I spent a lot of time playing it, although I never picked up any expansions.
  12. Thomas was Alone (Android) - I haven't gotten too far in the game yet, owing largely to the fact that the game has critical audio, and I can't mute the game while playing like I do with Neuroshima Hex or Small World. But it's amusing, and I'll continue playing.
  13. Baldurs Gate: Enhanced Edition (PC) - I've probably played this game to the end 2-3 times, and started it at least a half dozen times. This playthrough, I'm approaching Nashkel and the mines, which is where a bug had stopped me every time I'd tried to replay the game recently. I'm sure that the Enhanced Edition has taken care of that bug though. So although I don't have time most weeks to play more than an hour or so, I'd like to think that I'll eventually get through the whole game and finally check out the Sword Coast expansion.
  14. Thief (PC) - I was amazed to find that with settings set to barebones minimum, this game will actually run on my machine. It's good, and given that I haven't yet started the second mission, maybe it's just that I haven't yet gotten into the game. The femme fatale introduced at the game's outset had me rolling my eyes, but I'm hoping that the story improves as I get further.
  15. Sentinels of the Multiverse (iPad) - I was disappointed that I couldn't get the game on my phone, as it's a tablet-only title, but I did eventually pick up the iOS version. I played the crap out of it over Thanksgiving vacation, quickly defeating all four base villains on normal and then on advanced difficulty. Playing on the tablet gave me a new appreciation for Bunker, Haka, and Tachyon.
